| John
F. Showalter, M.D. graduated from
Wabash College, Indiana, in 1969 and Loyola University's
Stritch School of Medicine in 1973. He completed
his internship at the State University of Iowa Hospitals,
Iowa City, a fellowship in pathology at the Veterans
Administration Hospital of Iowa City followed by
a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Indiana
University Affiliated Hospitals. He then completed
a fellowship in hand and microsurgery at St. Vincent's
Hospital in Indianapolis.
Dr. Showalter, a Wheaton native, returned to the
Wheaton area in 1978 to begin his practice dedicated
solely to Hand Surgery and Microsurgery. As a Hand
Surgery pioneer in the suburbs, Dr. Showalter was
the first in the area to establish a practice uniquely
dedicated to the upper extremity. He developed local
standards for replantation surgery and performed
the first successful replantation in DuPage County
in 1978. He was also a vanguard in the development
of hand rehabilitation in the suburbs and established
systems which coordinated medical care and specialized
hand therapy. Though he enjoys all facets of upper
extremity care, he takes special interest in arthritis
reconstruction, the care of acute wrist and hand
fractures, and reconstructive microsurgery.
Dr. Showalter is certified by the American Board
of Orthopaedic Surgery with a Certificate of Added
Qualification in Surgery of the Hand. He is a member
of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons,
the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and
the American Association for Hand Surgery. He is
a past chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic
Surgery at Central DuPage Hospital and co-founder
and past president of the Chicago Society for Surgery
of the Hand.
